Gain peace of mind with an automatic, fixed mount, USCG-approved fire extinguishing system.
If your boat has an inboard engine, installing a fixed-mount, automatic fire extinguisher in the engine compartment can help protect your boat against an engine room fire—even when you are not there. West Marine offers conventional, fixed-mount fire suppression systems by FIREBOY-XINTEX and a unique, non-traditional system by ELIDE FIRE USA.
Currently, FIREBOY-XINTEX systems use HFC-227 fire extinguishing agent and automatically activate when they sense the heat of a fire. West Marine offers these systems in different sizes to match the volume of different size engine compartments. (Editor’s note: The HFC-227 agent is currently being phased out and will be replaced by 3M’s Novec 1230 fire extinguishing agent.)
ELIDE’s system, referred to as the “ELIDE Fireball”, consists of a ball that contains a dry fire extinguishing agent. These balls can be mounted above any location where a fire might occur. When the ball comes in contact with a flame it undergoes a harmless detonation that disperses the extinguishing agent and extinguishes the fire in 3–5 seconds. The ball can also be removed from its mount hand tossed into a fire if needed. Currently, ELIDE fireballs are not USCG approved—but can be installed to complement a USCG-approved fire extinguishing system.
All fire extinguishing systems require periodic inspection, maintenance and replacement if needed. Items related to fire extinguishing systems include automatic engine shutdown systems and fire extinguisher manual release cable kits.
