Use a funnel so you don't spill a drop.

To prevent spills and overflows when replacing engine oil, transmission fluid, brake and other fluids, we recommend use of an appropriate size funnel. West Marine offers a graduated set of four lightweight, plastic funnels. The set consists of one 2", one 3", one 4" and one 5" diameter funnel. Their bright, lime green color makes these filters easy to spot and each includes a small hole so you can hang them up. We also offer an 18" Long Neck Funnel, from the same manufacturer (Grip on Tools) which is ideal for situations where the fill hole for engine oil, transmission or other fluids is obstructed in such a way that a standard funnel cannot be used.

Another Type of Funnel: Conductive Portable Fuel Filters

The leading cause of clogged fuel lines and engine failure is dirty fuel. As fuel sits, it can become contaminated by dirt, debris and water. This is a problem that world cruisers sometimes encounter in far flung locations where the quality of the fuel is often suspect. Because of this, many cruisers use a portable fuel filter, which is a marine fuel funnel that screens out debris and separates out any water that might be in the fuel. The Conductive Portable Fuel Filters offered by West Marine are this type of filter. They can be used for filtering gasoline or diesel fuel. Medium (5 1/2" diameter) and Large (9" diameter) sizes are offered. They are made of conductive, black polypropylene, which can reduce the chance of a fire or explosion during fueling, provided the funnel is properly grounded.
