Life Jackets & Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
When you're on the water, a reliable life jacket is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can wear. Also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs), life jackets help keep boaters afloat in the event of an emergency and are required safety gear on most vessels.
At West Marine, we offer a wide range of life jackets and boating PFDs designed for comfort, safety, and performance. Whether you're sailing offshore, kayaking on calm waters, or fishing with friends, the right marine life jacket can provide the buoyancy and protection you need.
Our collection includes US Coast Guard–approved life jackets, inflatable PFDs, foam flotation vests, and specialized life jackets designed for boating, fishing, paddling, and water sports.
Types of Life Jackets & Personal Flotation Devices
Understanding the different types of life jackets can help you choose the right one for your activity and boating conditions.
Type I Offshore Life Jackets
Type I life jackets provide the highest level of buoyancy and are designed for open water where rescue may take longer.
Type II Near-Shore Life Jackets
These PFDs are intended for calmer waters where rescue is expected to happen quickly.
Type III Flotation Aids
Type III life jackets are commonly used for recreational boating, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Inflatable Life Jackets
Inflatable life jackets offer comfort and mobility while still providing excellent flotation when activated.
Foam Life Jackets
Traditional foam life jackets provide consistent buoyancy without requiring activation.
Life Jackets for Different Activities
Choosing a life jacket designed for your activity ensures the best combination of comfort, mobility, and safety.
Life Jackets for Boating
Boaters often prefer comfortable Type III flotation devices that provide mobility while still meeting safety requirements.
Life Jackets for Fishing
Fishing life jackets often include extra pockets and lightweight designs for all-day wear.
Life Jackets for Kayaking & Paddleboarding
Paddling life jackets prioritize flexibility and mobility so you can move freely while paddling.
Life Jackets for Sailing
Sailing life jackets often feature harness attachments and additional buoyancy for offshore conditions.
Inflatable vs Foam Life Jackets
Boat owners often choose between inflatable life jackets and traditional foam flotation devices.
Inflatable PFDs
Inflatable life jackets are compact and comfortable, making them popular among experienced boaters.
Foam PFDs
Foam life jackets provide consistent flotation without needing activation and are often preferred for water sports or youth life jackets.
How to Choose the Right Life Jacket
When selecting a life jacket, consider the following factors:
Proper Fit
A life jacket should fit snugly without restricting movement. Many life jackets are sized according to chest measurement and body weight.
Buoyancy
Different PFD types provide different levels of buoyancy depending on the intended activity.
Comfort & Mobility
Features such as lightweight materials, breathable mesh panels, and adjustable straps can improve comfort.
Safety Certification
Look for US Coast Guard–approved life jackets, which meet safety standards required for boating.
Life Jacket Sizing Guide
Choosing the correct size is essential for safety.
General sizing considerations include:
-
chest measurement
-
body weight
-
age category (adult, youth, infant)
Children’s life jackets should always be selected based on weight and should include head support and safety straps.
U.S. Coast Guard Life Jacket Requirements
The U.S. Coast Guard requires that boats carry a wearable life jacket for each person onboard. These life jackets must be USCG approved and accessible in case of emergency.
Some vessels are also required to carry a throwable flotation device in addition to wearable life jackets.

Changes to Life Jacket Labeling
Until recently, all USCG-approved life jackets and flotation aids sold by West Marine were assigned a USCG “Type” designation (Type I, II, III, IV, or V). Most recreational life jackets were formerly labeled Type III. Under the new Harmonized Life Jacket Approval system, equivalent products are now labeled as Level 70 buoyancy aids.
