How acid-based cleaners work.

Star brite, West Marine and Toon-brite aluminum cleaners owe their effectiveness to acid-based formulas that react with the oxide layer on the surface of aluminum. The oxide layer is a thin layer of aluminum oxide that forms naturally on the surface of aluminum. In addition to removing oxidation, these formulas also contain a proprietary blend of surfactants that dislodge dirt and grime so it can be easily rinsed away.
