Shop rust cleaners/removers at West Marine.

West Marine offers specially formulated rust removers/cleaners for removing rust stains and surface rust from metal and fiberglass surfaces. Brands of rust removers/cleaners found at West Marine include West Marine (our own proprietary formulation), Boeshield, Meguiar’s, Star brite, Whink and Z-Tuff Products. These formulations are typically used to clean away rust stains around stainless steel stanchions, nuts bolts and other marine fittings.

Rust Removal Methods

Removing rust or rust stains from metal or fiberglass surfaces can be accomplished by mechanical or chemical means.

Mechanical Removal

Methods used to mechanically remove rust include rubbing with bronze wool, brushing with a wire brush, wet or dry sanding or use of abrasive rubbing compounds. Abrasive rubbing compounds offered by West Marine to mechanically remove rust include Meguiar’s #49 Mirror Glaze Heavy Duty Oxidation Remover and Meguiar’s #91 Power Cut Compound.

Chemical Removal

Chemical removal of rust requires the use of chemical formulations that dissolve the rust so it can be rinsed away with (hopefully) limited or no scrubbing required.
