Comments about Em-trak Marine Electronics AIS R100 Receiver:

I'm not so sure I understand the advantage of connecting this product to a PC but it didn't seem to be connecting or doing much magic when I plugged it in to the usb on my laptop. Now that I'm seeing reviews of cheap mini usb connector complaints, I'm thinking maybe I'm experiencing similar issues. I wired it directly into my brand new 741 Garmin NEMA 2000 port and it seemed to work as designed.
I think the installation manual needs more detailed discussion to help non professional installer make more informed decisions about the options that are available and methods that are most commonly used.

Comments about Em-trak Marine Electronics AIS R100 Receiver:

At first I thought you couldn't power it through the USB connection b/c nothing happened when I plugged it into my PC. But I jiggled the wire and it powers up... for a second or 2 until the cable moves. This sure won't work on a rockin boat. It's going back to WM. If you're not going to use the USB connection, it may work for you. But it is not a quality product.

        R100 USB Connect Weak Link

Comments about Em-trak Marine Electronics AIS R100 Receiver:

The em-trak R100 AIS receiver works well. There is one drawback to this device: the mini-USB connector. The mini-USB connector and supplied mating connector and cable are not a good fit for each other. They make a sloppy connection, which leads to intermittent power for the device.

When the em-trak R100 is connected via USB to a MacOS 10.6.8 computer, occasional kernel panics in the MacOS have occurred. They are very rare, but seem to occur only when the em-trak R100 is connected. They may be a result of the loose connection at the USB connector.

The receiver sensitivity seems good. AIS targets at a range of 55 miles have been received on occasion.
