After looking for several alternative products this unit provided the ideal solution for my marine application. I have a twin engine Yahama jet boat and fellow owners appear to have trouble extracting enough oil during their annual oil chance. Coupled with the fact the hold is tight quarters and the only method to remove oil is using a unit like this. My observations are:a.) Extract twin engine oil in tight quarters, b.) contained extraction tubes that fits oil reservior access requiring different diameter openings, c.)simple instructions to operate, d.) capable to extract 6 quarts of oil without interuption in a short time, e.) secure knowing oil will not spill due to good construction preventing possible clean up or environmental concerns while in storage lot. At first I thought the price was high for an extractor as well as a little bulky to store afterwards but the job was so easy to complete that my concerns were not warranted.

Previously owned a Top Sider oil change unit from West Marine but thought this would work better as it is easier to see the oil. I have a 2011 350 Mag engine. When I went to insert the dipstick tube, it fits, however it will not go all the way in as there appears to be a slight curve in my dipstick opening on the engine. The material the tube is made of is not flexible and you can not force it in without taking a chance of damaging the engine. Bottom line, I could not get it down far enough to create enough suction to pull out any substantial oil. So basically it is useless and I don't think I'll be able to return it at this point. Never had this problem with the older system.

Comments about West Marine Manual Oil Extractor - 6.9 Quart:

Bought this to change the transmission fluid on my 07 Focus. The car had far too much fluid in the transmission when I bought it, so I figured it could use a change too.
After extracting 3-4 quarts from the pan throught the dip stick, I put the right amount of the right fluid back in. After 1-2 trips I immediately noticed the car ran smoother, and shifted far better. I also used it to extract the power steering fluid and replace it with new fluid. The pump became quieter, making the car run quieter too.
Since the tubes are quite long I've also been using it for the engine oil. The only problem is accessing the messy oil filter, but that's not this tool's fault.

I tried to use this unit to change oil in a Cummins 6BT5 diesel engine but could not get a suction because the hose was too short and would not reach down to the bottom of the engine. West Marine should make a longer extension hose.

Adaptor fit onto the dip stick tube...3 pumps 8 quarts of oil extracted in a short time. No clean up... was very easy to empty... by far the best maintenance tool I have purchased on quite some time.. Definitely a plus.

Although this unit looks to be built well, it is useless at this time for changing the oil in my boat as the tubes are at least 1 foot too short. ( 6.0 L PCM ). It always seems to be the most inexpensive thing in the kit that causes the biggest trouble. I am sure this company could supply longer tubes. Too long is not a problem, too short is a huge problem!

Worked fine the first time. The second time I went to use it (different motor) and the hose was too short. The connections are weak and prone to leaking, which is why people complain about this unit. It's a bad design. If it had one long hose it would be much more reliable.

Mercuiser 4 cyl. Had to cut the metal dip stick tube about 3/8" to get the Mercruiser hose fitting to work (Note: A plumber's tube cutter worked perfect, no shavings down the tube.) and presto, all the oil was out in 10 minutes. Give it a couple easy pumps at the end and it self cleaned the plastic tubes.
Too Cool! No more waiting for the marine service guy to show up.
