After looking for several alternative products this unit provided the ideal solution for my marine application. I have a twin engine Yahama jet boat and fellow owners appear to have trouble extracting enough oil during their annual oil chance. Coupled with the fact the hold is tight quarters and the only method to remove oil is using a unit like this. My observations are:a.) Extract twin engine oil in tight quarters, b.) contained extraction tubes that fits oil reservior access requiring different diameter openings, c.)simple instructions to operate, d.) capable to extract 6 quarts of oil without interuption in a short time, e.) secure knowing oil will not spill due to good construction preventing possible clean up or environmental concerns while in storage lot. At first I thought the price was high for an extractor as well as a little bulky to store afterwards but the job was so easy to complete that my concerns were not warranted.

After using the small transfer pumps which connect directly to the dipstick tube, I was looking forward to a cleaner alternative. The extension tube was too stiff to make the turn to reach the oil pan so I used the dipstick "hose" adapter. I pumped repeatedly with NO extraction. Vacuum leaks were audible and the pump would not build sufficient vacuum to pull any oil into the reservoir. After securing one connection with the only small hose clamp I had available, the vacuum was barely enough to slowly extract oil. Vacuum continued to bleed down, requiring repeated pumping to maintain vacuum.
After about an hour, yes an hour, and maybe 300+ strokes of the pump handle, a full gallon of oil was in the reservoir. I will try again with the mid-season oil change using another hose clamp to further reduce vacuum leaks and hopefully have a better experience. The first experience with this pump was not what I expected although the arm work-out was a bonus. The long, thin extension tube which adapts to the dip stick connection allows easy pumping from several feet away but it also makes for a slow process. If all the oil extractor pumps leak as badly as this one, you'll need to pack a lunch...and a few hose clamps.

Comments about West Marine Manual Oil Extractor - 6.5L:

I was looking for a simple to use, durable, manual oil change pump and decided to try this one. I liked it's slim size that was easy to fit into the engine compartment and seemed to be light, yet sturdy. I admit I was a bit skeptical, but I was not disappointed in any way! It was very simple to use and worked like a champ! Simply run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil and make it thinner, choose the right size tube to insert into the dipstick tube, give it a few easy pumps, press the pressure relief and wait for the tank to draw out the dirty oil. I've used other manual pump and electric pump models and was disappointed. If they worked, they didn't last or they cost a small fortune. This unit was so easy I took it home to use on my mower, pressure washer and other small engine powered equipment. It made those jobs easier and cleaner than using the drain plugs and dripping oil everywhere. The price was really fair considering how well it works and how durable it seems to be. I expect I'll have this one for a long time.

I was so fed up with spending $144 on each Jabsco Flat Oil Pump system because it trickled in. I got this one at the recommendation of Ronnie in Pompano Beach. I attached the main house adapter to the dipstick hose (inserted into the dipstick pipe)... Placed it on the floor of my engine room. Released the main engine oil cap. Pumped it 6 or 8 times - noticed the oil was coming up. Btw - started the engine to have oil temp reach 132 degrees. Sat back and watches it take out 2 gallons in a matter of 10 to 15 min. Nice pump! And 2/3 of the price!
