VHF External Speaker/Microphones aka “Lapel Mics”.
These microphones enable you to use your handheld VHF radio when it is in your pocket, or mounted on your belt. They are great for use on inflatable boats, or on small fast powerboats, since the speaker/mic is held close to your ears, and you don’t have to bring the entire radio up to your face. Examples of lapel mics include Standard Horizon’s CMP460 Submersible Speaker/Microphone, and ICOM’s Waterproof Speaker Microphone for their M85 Handheld VHF Radio.
VHF Radio Headsets
Headset style speaker/microphones include models with a push-to-talk button and models with a VOX (voice activated) microphone — and models that include both. Models with VOX capability are the easiest to use, since they eliminate the need to manually press a button to talk. Examples of speaker/microphone headsets include ICOM’s M7 HS94 Earhook Headset and Standard Horizon’s SSM-64A VHF Radio Headset with VOX and PTT.
VHF Second Stations
Many fixed-mount VHF radios can use one or more optional full-function microphones that in addition to including a channel display control all functions of compatible VHF radios, including AIS functions and all DSC functions. VHF second stations are ideal for use on a flybridge, tuna tower, navigation station, cockpit, or wherever you can use VHF communications. They are also a good alternative to keeping a less-powerful handheld VHF at a second location. These remotes use the full power of the fixed-mount radio (25 watts) and the effectiveness of a full size antenna to ensure that you have excellent range. Examples of VHF second stations include Standard Horizon’s SSM-70H wired Remote Access Microphone, ICOM’s CommandMic™ IV Microphone and B&G’s H60 wireless Handset for the V60 VHF Radio.
