High-performance, easy-to-apply traditional amber-colored varnish.

When your brightwork is the first thing people notice about your boat, you don't settle for ordinary varnish. Pettit Captain's Varnish (1015) is a premium, alkyd-urethane spar varnish engineered specifically for the demanding conditions of the marine environment — relentless UV exposure, salt air, moisture cycling, and temperature swings that would crack or cloud lesser finishes in a single season.

A Traditional Finish with Modern Performance. Captain's Varnish delivers the warm, rich amber tone that has defined classic yacht brightwork for generations. That characteristic golden hue doesn't just look beautiful — it penetrates and enhances the natural grain of teak, mahogany, ash, and other fine boat woods, giving each plank and rail its own depth and character. This is the look that wins at the dock.

UV Protection That Lasts. Extended UV exposure is the primary enemy of wood finishes on the water. Captain's Varnish incorporates enhanced UV absorbers that form a durable protective barrier, significantly slowing the photodegradation that bleaches, grays, and cracks unprotected wood. Your investment in fine woodwork stays protected season after season.

Exceptional Gloss Retention. Many varnishes achieve a high-gloss finish right out of the can but lose their shine within months under sun and weather. Captain's Varnish is formulated to hold its gloss over extended periods, reducing the frequency of full re-coating and making annual maintenance a refinement rather than a restoration.

Easy Application, Professional Results. Whether you're a seasoned brightwork enthusiast or tackling your first varnish project, Captain's Varnish flows and levels exceptionally well. Its well-balanced viscosity allows for smooth brush application with minimal lap marks and brush strokes, making it approachable for DIY applications while still delivering the quality standard demanded by professional finishers.

Versatile Above-the-Waterline Use. Suitable for interior and exterior applications above the waterline, Captain's Varnish is the right choice for handrails, toerails, caprails, hatches, cockpit trim, companionway boards, interior joinery, and decorative wood accents. It is not intended for below-waterline or submerged applications.

Build a System, Build a Finish. For best results, apply a minimum of 6 to 8 coats with light sanding between coats. The first coats penetrate and seal the wood, while subsequent coats build the protective film and gloss depth. Thin the first coat 10–15% with the appropriate solvent for maximum penetration on bare wood. Annual freshening with 1–2 light-sanded topcoats will maintain the finish and extend the life of your brightwork significantly.

For professional-grade results, surface preparation is everything. Strip previous failing finishes completely, sand to a clean, fair surface, and ensure the wood is clean and dry before application.
