A stationary carbon flange is held in contact against a stainless steel flange, which rotates with the prop shaft. The high-density carbon/graphite flange is attached to the boat by a nitrile bellows which, with the help of water pressure, produces constant pressure between the carbon and stainless flanges. This mechanical seal is 100% watertight and virtually maintenance-free. Made from space-age carbon composites, heavy-duty nitrile O-rings, nitrile bellows, and Type 316 stainless rotor and fasteners, P.S.S. Shaft Seals are durable, strong, resistant to high temperatures, saltwater, UV radiation and petroleum-based products and corrosion.
