WEST MARINE Jon 12 Dinghy

Fishing ponds, protected lakes, slow rivers, backwater flats, marina tender duty — the West Marine Jon 12 is the versatile, go-anywhere utility boat that handles all of it without complaint. Built from rugged UV-stabilized Fortiflex high-density polyethylene, this 12-foot flat-bottom jon boat combines serious fishing functionality with the kind of durable, low-maintenance construction that lets you focus on what matters: time on the water, not time in the garage.

Flat-Bottom Jon Boat Design — Proven Utility in a Compact Package.
The jon boat form factor has earned its place in fishing culture for good reason. The flat bottom provides exceptional stability at rest — critical when you're standing to cast, netting a fish, or leaning over the gunwale to land your catch. The shallow draft allows access to water too skinny for V-hull boats, opening up backwater fishing grounds that deeper-draft vessels simply can't reach. And the simple, open layout maximizes usable space for gear, tackle, coolers, and passengers in a package that trailers and car-tops with ease.

Fortiflex High-Density Polyethylene Hull — Rugged, UV-Stable, and Low Maintenance.
The Jon 12 is built from Fortiflex HDPE — a premium rotomolded high-density polyethylene specifically engineered for marine applications. This isn't the same plastic used in budget utility products. Fortiflex HDPE offers:

  • Impact Resistance: Absorbs collisions with rocks, logs, dock pilings, and gravel launches without the cracking or delamination that affects fiberglass hulls
  • UV Stabilization: Integrated UV inhibitors resist the photodegradation that fades, embrittles, and ultimately destroys unprotected plastics in outdoor use — the hull maintains its structural integrity and appearance through years of sun exposure
  • Corrosion Immunity: HDPE does not rust, corrode, or require painting — no bottom paint, no gel coat repairs, no annual hull maintenance beyond a rinse
  • Flexibility: Unlike rigid fiberglass, HDPE flexes slightly on impact rather than fracturing — a meaningful advantage in rocky or debris-laden water
  • Weight: HDPE construction keeps the Jon 12 lightweight relative to aluminum or fiberglass alternatives, simplifying trailering, launching, and single-person handling

Built-In Motor Mounts — Bow and Stern.
Both the bow and stern are equipped with built-in motor mounts, giving you configuration flexibility that most jon boats don't offer. Run a trolling motor off the bow for precise bow-first boat control while fishing — the standard approach for serious freshwater anglers. Or mount a small outboard on the stern transom for powered transit between fishing spots. The stern transom is rated for outboards up to 6 HP, providing more than enough power to move efficiently across a lake or river system. Max trolling motor thrust is rated at 40 lbs., compatible with the most popular 12V freshwater trolling motors on the market. Recommended shaft length is 36 inches for proper motor depth and performance.

Integrated Battery Storage — Power Management Built In.
Running a trolling motor requires a deep-cycle battery — and stowing that battery safely and securely is a challenge on many small boats. The Jon 12 addresses this with integrated battery storage compartments, keeping your battery low in the hull for optimal weight distribution and securing it against shifting in chop or during transit. Clean, organized, and ready to fish.

Two Large Bench-Style Seats — Comfortable for All-Day Use.
Two wide bench seats provide comfortable seating for up to the rated passenger capacity, positioned to distribute weight evenly across the hull. Bench seating also doubles as gear organization infrastructure — stow tackle bags, dry bags, and equipment under and alongside the seats to keep the deck clear for fishing.

Integrated Rod Holders — Hands-Free Fishing.
Built-in rod holders are positioned for practical fishing use — set your spinning rod or baitcaster in the holder while you work a second line, eat lunch, or wait out a slow bite. No aftermarket rod holder installation required, no drilling into the hull, no clamp-on compromises.

Bow and Stern Storage — Serious Gear Capacity.
Dedicated storage areas at both the bow and stern provide space for tackle boxes, bait buckets, dry bags, coolers, and the rest of the gear that accumulates on a full day of fishing. The layout is intentional — keeping gear organized and accessible without cluttering the fishing deck.

Integrated Oarlock Sockets — Silent Running When You Need It.
For fishing in situations where motor noise would spook fish, approaching a promising bank quietly, or navigating in no-motor zones, the Jon 12's integrated oarlock sockets accept standard oars for manual rowing. No aftermarket installation required — the sockets are built into the gunwale structure at the correct position for efficient rowing.

Drainage System — Know Before You Go.
The Jon 12 features a specific drainage configuration that's worth understanding before your first launch. The rear compartment drains via standard drain plugs located at the two thru-hulls positioned in the back of the boat just under the transom. The two forward compartments do not drain via plug — they require either a shop vac or inverting the hull to drain completely. Plan your post-launch routine accordingly and keep a small bilge pump or sponge aboard for the forward compartments.

USCG and CE Safety Certified.
The Jon 12 meets both US Coast Guard and CE (European Conformity) safety standards — the recognized benchmarks for small recreational boat construction, stability, and buoyancy. These certifications confirm that the hull has been evaluated against established safety criteria for the vessel's rated capacity and design conditions. Look for the USCG capacity plate for rated passenger and weight limits.

The Jon 12 is designed for calm, protected water use — ponds, lakes, slow rivers, and protected coastal areas. It is not intended for open ocean, rough water, or offshore use. Always wear a USCG-approved life jacket aboard.
