I replaced a Garmin 740s and P66 transducer with this new unit. Love the touch screen from both units. The 741xs has the ability to pinch the screen to zoom in/out. GPS update is faster for the 741xs 10 times per second and also has more waypoint storage 3000 total. I coupled my new 741xs with the Airmar TM150 transducer. I fish in saltwater that is mostly 150' or less. The old 740s preformed will in this but the new 741xs is just astonishing in the ability to separate the target fish from the bottom. Best example I can give is comparing a TV with rabbit ear antenna and new HD TV with satellite reception. The difference is that pronounced.

Used in Gulf of Mexico near Clearwater. Unit works fine as a gps bot does not give good detail as a sonar or fishfinder. We located several gps coordinates from a nautical map where sunken barges, tanks, man made reefs had been placed in about 30 feet of water. Sonar would not identify any of them and did not give any detail on fish.
Went out with a guide using a Lowrance and was shocked at the sonar and fish detail in comparison.

Comments about Garmin GPSMAP 741xs Fishfinder/GPS Combo, US Coastal/Inland maps, Transducer Sold Separately:

A great replacement for my 1994 Micrologic GPS, which was pretty good in its own right, but getting a little slow to lock in. This unit finds ten or twelve satellites and is ready to go in seconds. Interestingly, it is mounted inside an instrument box in front of the console, with fiberglass above it. I thought I would need an external antenna (and I bought one) but it functions exceptionally well on just the internal antenna.
The fishing charts (loads of bottom contour data) are unbelievably detailed.
A chart plotter is a great upgrade over just a coordinate display in dangerous, shoal and rock infested waters. All it has to do is save a prop and the investment is repaid.
I am trying to figure out if there is a way to enlarge the display of bearing/distance so they can be seen more easily from the helm. I would make these an inch high if I could.

Comments about Garmin GPSMAP 741xs Fishfinder/GPS Combo, US Coastal/Inland maps, Transducer Sold Separately:

This is our third installed Garmin. I had it installed by a professional, with the DownVu transducer. The unit has been hard-wired into my Horizon Eclipse VHF radio to allow for the use of the radio's DSC feature. I was able to easily transfer my 200+ waypoints from our old 740 to the 741. Rather than flush mount, the unit is mounted on top of my console to allow for easy access by the boat driver and passenger, adjustable angle to minimize sun interference, and for easy removal. I remove the unit at night when we are docked overnight for security purposes, and to minimize weathering when stored on the trailer at home.

The 741XS has noticeably faster processing speeds than the 740, so our position updates on the map more quickly. This is helpful when navigating a narrow channel in the Everglades or locating a lobster hole in the Florida Keys.

The operations are a little different than the 740, but I learned them very quickly, and after a long weekend, I feel very comfortable navigating around the unit. The touch screen works well, but can be very sensitive. As a cold front passed, we were in rough waters in a downpour. It was sometimes hard to hit the right command on the screen as the boat was rocking and bouncing. Some of the displays they offer are gimicky 3D. We use the standard nav chart mostly.

We use the unit for some very exacting navigating in the Everglades. Many of the channels are very narrow, surrounded by mudflats, or worse, oyster bars. With the help of my scientist son, we have become adept at utilizing images on Google Earth to establish place waypoints along a passable routes. These are transferred into the Homeport program, then by card to the unit itself.

The DownVu gives a very clear picture of the bottom. With this transom mounted transducer, I begin to lose signal quality when running above 30mph. We use the wate temperature gauge and tides info.

This is a great unit, buy it!
