A failed idle air control motor may be the cause for engine stalls when shifting into gear.
A malfunctioning idle air control motor (or idle air control valve) can cause irregular idle speeds that can result in stalling when the boat is put into gear. The repair can be as simple as replacing the failed idle air control motor. This Sierra idle air control motor is engineered to meet or exceed factory specifications and is compatible with V6 and V8 engines with an ECM555 used on many MerCruiser and Crusader engines. An O-ring is included to restore the seal around the mounting flange. Replacing the idle air control motor may be a simple solution to a frustrating and possibly dangerous situation.
