What’s an important part of every great day on the water? Food! West Marine Sausalito is challenging anglers, sailors and cruisers to demonstrate their best alfresco culinary techniques at the Grand Opening of the new flagship store at Marin Gateway Shopping Plaza July 31- August 3. Each round will pit two-to-three teams (minimum of one chef, maximum of three people each) against each other to vie for a $200 West Marine gift card. In the Bay Area, BBQing is more than just burgers. We’d like to see what you can do with local seafood, fruit and vegetables.
Each team will be given a box of the same items, including salmon provided by Golden Gate Salmon, seasonal fruit and vegetables plus standard items such as olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and herbs. Grills will be provided, as will tongs, foil and platters. There will also be a box of “mystery” ingredients. Each team will be able to select three of these items (rotating amongst teams one choice at a time.) Competitors are asked to bring their own knives and can bring their own utensils, food and flavorings as long as it all fits in a box no larger than an 18”cube.
Teams will plate four dishes for specially selected judges, with remaining tastes being distributed to onlookers in small paper tasting cups for a “Public Choice” award. Dishes will be awarded points for flavor, preparation and uniqueness. The team with the highest average points in the “Public Choice” award all weekend will also win a Magma Chef’s Mate Gas Grill.
Entry is free. Teams should enter by submitting the official entry form to firstname.lastname@example.org. Final team competition times will be announced the week of July 28, 2014. Where possible, we’ll pit affiliated teams against each other for maximum competition! (Yacht clubs, fishing clubs, nonprofits, etc.)
