      Comments about Winch Grease:

At the suggestion of my local Westmarine manager, I used grease provided for sailing winches, instead of normal lithium grease for my old Barient Model 24 2 speed winches. It's supplied in a 3.5 oz tube. The tube describes it as "white grease", but it's not as white as lithium, but not as clear as silicone grease or Super Lube synthetic. The Harken website is not too helpful about what the grease is, except for normal use you should grease your winches twice a year. The grease is thick and seems like good stuff. It's only been one spring on this grease job, so I can't say how it will perform, but the winches were shamefully dry when I bought the boat, and they work well now. One tube easily did the two winches, which have 2 main drum bearings, 4 gear bearings, and five gears, and there's maybe enough left over to do one more. The main winch works hard with my main halyard and sheet both (500 sf sail), and so far things feel fine. It will get 5 stars if the winch runs well all summer.
