I purchased this and tried it out paddling out a slough onto San Francisco bay after work. I was against headwinds and tide heading out. I rode the tide and wind coming in. I was trying it out before letting other people use it. I had fun. It's great for what it is.

I have multiple high-end boards. In our house we always need extras, often for kids. I considered buying a pair of these online. Since they were in stock in a local store I went and grabbed one there. I'm glad I did as it properly set my expectations before putting the money down. It was a little different than I expected from the catalog description. If it had showed up I'd have been disappointed. WIth proper expectations it's a great board for the price and for certain uses. I hope this review clarifies for other potential purchasers.

It is really just a foam board with a smooth bottom. Granted it's my favorite foam, high density polyethylene. It has stringers inside that give it rigidity. You stand on the foam side which is textured and gives good traction. The bottom is smooth. It came with a kit with fin, a rustic leash (something I'll never use), spare paddle grip, spare fin mounting nut and a screwdriver for mounting the fin. It also came with a board bag (which I wound not bother with for this board but might use for other boards) and a basic, serviceable aluminum and plastic paddle.

All in all it's ready to go. Add a life jacket, take it to the water, put the fin on, drop it in the water and paddle. Don't forget to peel the plastic shipping film that's shrink wrapped on it. I suspect not pulling the shipping plastic off is why another reviewer found the board to be slippery.

The topside of the board has a slight upward rocker at the front and tapers down at the back. The bottom has enough upward taper at the front and back to give a smooth hull form while paddling straight ahead. The bottom is flat from side to side. In a crosswind the flat bottom means that in any crosswind the only thing between you and going sideways is the paddle and the fin. If you paddle in windy areas this may be a concern. The flat bottom and hull shape also mean that it does not have good turning properties by leaning. All the steering is done by the paddle. Beginners will not notice. Experts should have reasonable expectations. The flat bottom, the width and minimal rocker make it very stable.

When standing on the board the high density foam is soft underfoot. It's like standing on new flip flops. Likewise, it's soft if you get down on knees to paddle (as into a strong headwind as I did when trying it out). When bouncing on the board, hopping up and down, the board flexes. You can feel it vibrate a couple of times on landing. You can tell the stringers are providing a lot of the end-to-end stiffness. For the hard core purist that means not all paddling energy is going into forward motion. On the other hand the flex also makes it really comfortable.

It paddles smoothly on flat water and is a good basic board. It's good in the sloughs, harbors and near shore bay. On a calm day it I'd use it in the deep bay or the ocean. I'll put my kids on it. I'll let guests use it. I'll use it myself sometimes, either when all other boards are spoken for or just because it's easy to leave this one on the car for a few weeks so I can go for unplanned paddles. Everybody will be happy.

I won't mind beating this board up rather than the more expensive boards. I won't mind when the foam gets torn up a bit. If something damages it because I left it on the car that will be fine. It won't get scratched (and because it's foam it won't scratch the car).

I would not use this board in the surf nor on rough water. I'd be careful who uses it in a crosswind. I'd not put a very heavy person on this. I'd not put the dog on it (as my dog would love to claw at the foam).

I'm happy to have this and find it a great alternative to expensive boards for light use and for me the right alternative to an inflatable board. The extra kit that comes with it (paddles etc) is nice to have and will be mixed and matched with other boards. When the local store gets more in stock I will go grab another.

When I picked this up at the store I was super excited and took it to the water. When I took off the clear overwrap I saw that there were already scratches on the board, some that ran -under- their orca logo. Also, the HDPE bottom looked to have a few small bubbles under it, like it wasn't glued thoroughly on or there were air bubbles when they glued it. Overall it appeared to be cheaply made, which wasn't a huge surprise considering it's several hundred dollars cheaper than most other boards, but a little sloppiness with with the glue where the foam meets plastic, or slightly rough cuts through the foam on the top where the hand hold is, those aren't the end of the world. But I don't see why a new -anything- should come with scratches already on it, looking like it's delaminating, or have dings in it (which is what we found on the other board when I brought mine back and they checked the other one to see if it was any better). Maybe this was just a one-off thing and my store just happened to get a couple bad ones, but it is worth a look before you bother hauling the little fella home.

Comments about 11'0" Orca Soft Stand up Paddleboard:

I got this board about a month ago at your Island Park, NY store. I got it after taking lessons from one of the local surf schools. I have to tell you I looked around at boards that cost well over $1000 but I decided to try the Orca based on price and availability. I was more than pleasantly surprised by its value. I use it in the ocean with light to moderate chop, and it is very stable. In the past few weeks I've been using it to ride smaller waves and it has performed quite good. Overall I'd say it is excellent and you get more than what you pay for.

We purchased 2 of these at our local store. Great service from the manager from start to finish. We live on a very large pond (what others might call a lake). For our purposes, the orca is a great buy. My husband who is over 6 feet tall uses it, as well as my kids who are 10 years old. I find paddle boarding to be so relaxing and I enjoy it a lot. We have kayaks and a canoe, but these make a great addition to our " water toy collection". I would definitely recommend these to others who have a similar area to use them.

Ordered board online, delivered to store within 2 days. Not very good customer service, notice of arrival of board was verbally given to a friend of mine who happened to be in the store? I waited several days before picking board up to see whether I would get a call from the store mgr or any associate, never received a call! WM prides themselves on customer service? Chose NOT to unwrap in store, first mistake! Got it home, unwrapped it and found several hollow areas on bottom. Brought board back to WM, they found another board in store, unwrapped it in store, appeared OK, got it home found a Hugh hollow spot under the logo on bottom of board, again brought it back, no offer to upgrade,no offer of any kind, they laughed it off, well you get what you pay for....yes how well I know that "you get what you pay for"....reccomendation to QA @ WM please check less expensive products before the items leave your warehouses, just saying.

First the delivery was a breeze. The company called to schedule a time for delivery and the truck showed up when scheduled and the driver friendly and informative. The only problem was there was one driver so I had to assist to get it in the house (though not a big deal). The packageing was great so there were no scratches or dings. The board is large enough for multiple people but easy to glide through the water. I would recommend it to others

Comments about 11'0" Orca Soft Stand up Paddleboard:

First the caveat- I am a total novice and have only ridden 2 other boards, so I have little to compare it to, and I have only spent a couple of days on the water with this board. That said, I have been really pleased with pretty much everything about the board. The price is about 1/2 of what I expected to pay. It seems stable even for a heavy (220 lbs) novice like me. It is pretty light and easy to carry. Tracks reasonably well. I have had no problems with traction on the deck (based on other reviews, I was planning on buying a traction pad, but after riding it, I don't think it needs it). Even the aluminum paddle handles almost as well as the fiberglass ones I have used. And, yes as pointed out in other reviews there are some imperfections on the sides, but it does not affect the ride and its my first board! It's going to dinged up anyway. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to get in the sport but not wanting spend a load of cash.

The product is a great beginner board with some major flaws -
                      1. The sides are soft which makes strapping it down near impossible without damage...which as said in other reviews has no impact on the ride.
                      2. The deck does get slippery, but I remedied that with some non skid bathroom stickers.

It's comfortable and great to beat up on while you are learning to ride. It's a bit flimsy which is exactly why I would NOT take it on rough water.
