I recently purchased a 2000 Sea Ray 380 Sundancer. None of the four bilge pumps were in working order. (3 in the bilge and 1 emergency in the cabin) Also, the original float switches didn't work. I replaced all with new. I like the newer float design with the ability to test the switch without removing it.

During checks for recommisioning, unit had failed - again. Disassembled to see if I could find failure mechanism. The "sealed" electronics unit had filled with water and the wiring had corroded. This cause the connections to fail and as the float would raise, no current would flow to the pump. I would imagine that it could also fail in a "on" position as well, likely causing a pump failure as well. I disasembled the replacement unit and caulked around the sealing joint. Hopefully, this will keep the water out. Too bad you have to "fix" a new unit to make sure it continues to function more than a season.

I purchased a used boat and found the three bilge pumps and floats needed replaced. I chose the Rule Rule-A-Matic Plus Float Switch because it is well made and easy to install.

    Service and delivery comments:

Associates at the West Marine store were very helpful. There were more than the three I needed in stock.

Comments about Rule Industries Rule-A-Matic Plus Float Switch:

These switches work well right out of the box, but make sure to have a spare in the boat since these will break shortly after installation. I've had two identical failures where the switch was stuck "closed". When the switch was supposed to shut off the pump, it just slowed it down. I'm switching to a design with no moving parts and uses electric field to sense water level. I am hoping for better luck. But certainly try any other float switch than this one.

Replacement is an annual requirement. Switching to another design after 2 replacements on a 3 year old boat.

This switch has a cage to keep items from holding switch open or closed. Keeps bilge pumps working properly. Nothing worse than taking on water and discovering the bilge pumps don't work...that will make your blood pressure to spike. Easy bro install and keeps your peace of mind
