Comments about Admiral's Varnish:
After owning & working on our current boat for ~1 yr, it was time to get serious about the bright work. I'd dabbled with a few different products to date & wasn't completely satisfied with any of them. So, when I noticed the Admiral's at a great price on sale last week I grabbed it. SO GLAD I DID. After only 2 coats on my hand rail, its gorgeous. This is what wood is supposed to look like on a boat. Plus it's supposed to have the highest amount of UV protectants, so I'm hoping it will hold up.
My prep included sanding to 180grit, vacuuming, rinsing down, let dry, then tacking down area & applying 1st coat with a brush (kind of substandard brush, to be honest). Let cure ~24hrs. Dry sand w/220. Vacuum, rinse, let dry, tack down, apply 2nd coat with same questionable brush. 24 hrs later, amazing, gorgeous. AND the one quart I bought went a lot further than I expected. I was able to 1st & 2nd coat about 40 feet of hand rail and the whole, exterior sb side of my salon cabin which is an area of approximately 60 sq.ft.
My plan is to now to wet sand w/ 320 btwn coats 2-3 & 3-4. But so far I'm sold, I've prepped & applied in a similar manor in the past with other products & have never achieved such great results. Some cons: build per coat is only moderate and the "amber" color seems drkr than most others I've tried. Which wouldnt be my first choice in color or build but the trade off is worth it. We'll still have to see how long it lasts, I'll try to remember to check back next year for an update. But for now its off to W.M. for several more QTS (I didn't see it in gallon size) while it's still on sale.
