Comments about West Marine Kayak Hoist System:

Not sure that I'll keep this, but at the price It may be good for hoisting a bike. The instructions are poor, confusing and a bit misleading. Threading the locking mechanism is not well explained. Thanks to YouTube I found a video for a similar device from a different brand that explained it well. I have a 12 foot Predator MX. The instructions indicate to put 2/3rds of the boat between the slings (leaving 2 feet at each end). The slings slip off the ends when hoisting. There is not info on if it's safe to put them closer together. Obviously I don't want the boat to land on the garage floor or on top of my car. My kayak weighs 80+ lbs., so hoisting it takes a lot of effort and strength. This is not a good choice for more senior aged kayakers. Finally, the slings should be adjustable in order to get the kayak closer to the ceiling. This can be a problem if you want to store it above and open garage door.

Comments about West Marine Kayak Hoist System:

Hardest part was finding ceiling studs. Rest of installation was pretty easy. If your kayak weighs 100 lbs, you must pull on the rope with 100 lbs! Thats very hard to do, especially when you consider that you must pull those ropes 6 or 8 times to get kayak up to the top. After a day's paddling, etc. thats quite a chore. Think twice on this one! Spend 100 bucks and buy an electric one!! Returning this puppy tomorrow.

I installed this system rather than wall hanging brackets. This gets the boards up and out of the way without using up valuable wall space.

Setting up and breaking down paddling trips couldn't be easier. Placed directly over the car, these lifts make loading and unloading at home virtually painless. Plus they add that constant reminder of how much you really love paddling. Two minor improvements could be made to make these five star; Rope binders to equalize (even out) the pull on the lifting lines, and fully adjustable straps (I paddle a very slender kayak that rides quite low with the straps provided.
