WEST MARINE
Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak

$349.99

Model # 11842002 | Mfg # AE3031
Limited availability.

Just how light is this kayak? It weighs about the same as an empty medium-sized cooler!

Twenty-one pounds. That's right, our Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak is about the average weight of a one-year-old child. Where can you take this kayak? Well...like anywhere! Without the need for a roof rack, a truck or a membership to a gym. Heck, your teenage daughter probably carries a heavier backpack to school. If you can get you to navigable water, you can get this kayak there as well. But enough about weight. How does it perform? Stable yet maneuverable. Straight tracking in flat water yet cuts easily through small surf. Performance comparable to those hard-to-store, hard-to-transport and (not to mention) relatively heavy rigid shell kayaks. The perfect choice if you live in an apartment and don't want a 9-foot-long green plastic coffee table (or your significant other doesn't want one).

Easy To Set Up

It doesn't get much easier than this. Unfold it, inflate it, attach the seat, start paddling. It deflates and folds back up for storage just as easily. We've even included a foot pump.

Hull Design

Made from three-layer, heavy-duty PVC tarpaulin with RF (radio frequency) welded seams that provide a consistent air tight seal, our kayak features rigid bow and stern forms and a tracking fin to improve performance and help keep you on course. We've placed a high denier polyester laminate topside over a bottom that combines two sheets of PVC with a fabric mesh, plus a landing plate for increased durability. Abrasion pads are added in high use areas for years of trouble-free paddling.

Cockpit

The seating compartment is encircled by air chambers for increased stability. A supportive, high-back, adjustable padded seat is included. The foam floor provides insulation between you and the cold water below for extra comfort.

Deck

The forward deck lacing and mesh accessory pocket are great places to stash items you need access to quickly. You'll also find comfortable carrying handles at the bow and stern to make those unplanned portages easier (although you might find that just inverting the kayak on top of your head and wearing it like a hat will suffice).

If you don't already own them or it's time to replace the ones you have, remember to order a kayak paddle and a life jacket (both sold separately) so you'll be ready to splash your kayak as soon as possible!

We have had two of these for several years and love they. Transport very easily and are durable. Took them to a family reunion and three folks went out and purchased one each as they had so much fun with ours. Have certainly gotten our money's worth. Use them in both salt water and fresh. Despite their age they are showing very little wear and should be good for several more seasons. Recommend highly for general use. My wife finds that they are very stable especially when getting into from a larger boat or dock.

I purchased the product when it was on sale and was very excited to begin using it. At first the kayak worked fine, but after having it for less than two weeks it would no longer inflate due to a leak. My mom also purchased the same kayak and encountered the same exact problem. Do not waste your money on this poorly made product. I do suggest the West Marines Saba 9.5 as a replacement.

This has been a great kayak to get started. I can transport it easily. HOWEVER, the rudder fell off early on
and has been VERY difficult to replace. The store couldn't do it and the manifacturer has not so far come through.

Lite, durable, BUT...

By Ethlebert

Pros

  • Lite Comfortable Roomy

Cons

  • Doesn't Track Well At All

Best Uses

Comments about West Marine Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak:

It's a fun, handy lite blow up...but very frustrating to paddle. I have had blow ups, and this one is the worst wiggle worm. I've tried it with and without the removable skag...and even tried to make one. But I think it is because of the tier drop configuration of the hull with the weight at the wide spot. Lets the bow wiggle around in front of the paddler. Wish I had gotten the one just a step above this one.

Comments about West Marine Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak:

This is a great kayak if you have limited space. It's easy to transport and is a lot of fun on the water. It doesn't take long to pump with the foot pump that is provided. It performs very well in the bay. This model has the newer skeg design which holds your course through the water very well. I am really enjoying it!

Comments about West Marine Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak:

We are very happy with the kayak & will buy another next time they go on sale. We have used it from our sailboat all summer. It inflates surprisingly fast and is quite comfortable. The seat does tend to slip down in use. I would suggest (at manufacture) the tie webbing be moved a little further down the back to prevent this.

Comments about West Marine Scamper I Inflatable Sit-Inside Kayak:

This Kayak was used 4 times and the fourth time a leak occurred around the valve. It was impossible with the kit provided and out cruising to repair a leak around the valve. I am out cruising and there is no West Marine to return the product to. If you leave the US leave this at home. If you plan on having this for more then a few months change your plans!

Used this week in the Florida Keys. Very easy to use for beginner. We stayed in calm waters but more experienced kayakers could use in currents and wind.
