Good Lifeline choice- how to splice

Cons

  • Requires Splicing

Best Uses

I recently installed STS-WR2 to replace the aging stainless lifelines on my sailboat. My initial impression is that this will work very well as lifelines.

I will update this review as I get more experience with the STS-WR2 as a lifelines and how it holds up.

Installing this requires splices. I asked New England Ropes, and they responded with the following:

The core of WR2 is the strength member so you would need to splice the core back to itself.

The basic instructions would be to follow the single braid eye splice instructions , ref. The following link.

http://www.neropes.com/Splicing%20Guide%20Individual%20Splices/SINGLE%20BRAID_EYE_SPLICE_LOCK%20_STITCH.pdf

The trick is where you pull the core out of the cover.

Follow step 1 marking the cover to find make D, which is where you pull the core out.

Then repeat making the marks on the core for performing the actual splice.

Note: a Fid dimension is 21 times the diameter of the rope being spliced, in this case the core of the WR2.

Which means if you are using the 5mm WR2 the core is 4mm so the fid dimension is 84mm (or 3.3 inches)

Note: Personally when I make mark D on the cover, I only go down 2 fid lengths form C ; but still do 3 when making the mark on the core. This way the cover slides up over part of the bury tail when finished making it more snug.

To finish the product, after performing the splice on the core, milk the cover back up over the core and cut off the excess cover tail; and use whipping twine to whip and stitch the cover in place
