Underwater seal

Formed a seal between swimming pool under water light electrical cable and metal container. Seal was in perfect condition 10 years later when the assembly had to be removed. The pool installer was amazed.

Most Liked Negative Review

Poor result after one season

I used 5200 to seal 3 glass prisms to their stainless steel frames and then to the deck two began to leak the first season the third leaked the second season. The solution was to dig out the sealer and use a different product, very disappointing.

Q
Is this the best for under water salt water usage?
Asked by Dan
Verified Reply - Maureen3M Fast Cure 5200 creates an extremely high-strength, watertight seal above and below the waterline. If you are looking for a bedding compound with exceptionally strong adhesion, and are not concerned about later removal of hardware. Yes, it can be used in saltwater. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I have to reseal the two skylights on my Bayliner 642 CD. The caulk that is there now is not working and allowing water intrusion. Would this product work for this task?
Asked by Travis
Verified Reply - MichaelA removable sealant, such as 3M 4000UV, is recommended for applications in which the hardware may need to be replaced at some point. 3M 5200 is a non removable sealant for permanent installations. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Which is the easiest way to remove the sealant ?
Asked by Enrique
Verified Reply - MaureenPer the vendor: "If the adhesive sealant is: UNCURED - Clean surfaces with 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (part number#08984) or acetone. DO NOT use alcohol-containing solvents, which will inhibit the cure of the sealant. IF CURED - Polyurethane adhesive sealant must be removed mechanically if cured. Use a knife, razor blade, piano wire, putty knife or sandpaper. Heating to remove 5200 and 4200 is not recommended because of the vapors given off and possible damage to the substrate. 5200 is meant for permanent applications." Some customers swear by spraying Anti-bond, carving with a sharp blade and spraying again. repeat as required as the outer layers soften and allow access to more. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I am replacing the core of the transom on a StarCraft Boat. What is the difference between 3M 5200 black and white? White is less expensive but equal results? It won't show.
Asked by Jad
Verified Reply - MaureenResults will be the same, the only difference is color. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I want to bond one half inch fiberglass strips, to dimpled FRP panels on the roof of my RV. Will your product adhere to both materials properly?
Asked by john
Verified Reply - NancyFor applying fiberglass strips you may want to try West System Six-10. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-system--six10-thickened-epoxy-adhesive--10287571?recordNum=1Was this answer helpful to you

Q
An answer to one of the questions states that 3m 5200 cannot be applied underwater. While an answer to a separate question states that 5200 can be applied underwater. Which is correct?
Asked by Clink
Verified Reply - MaureenPer the vendor: "This product will not adhere to a wet surface. The boat most be pulled out and the area dried thoroughly before this can be applied."Was this answer helpful to you
Q
From the above answered questions, there are conflicting answers on applying to wet surfaces or below the waterline. On one question, the answer was no, that the surface needed to be dry during application. On another answer, application below the waterline was said to be applicable, as the product was "water activated." Please fully answer the question as to whether the product can be used on wet surfaces or applied below the waterline. Not asking if it can be applied and then submerged, asking if it can be applied to surfaces that are in the water at the time of application.
Asked by SG
Verified Reply - Nancy5200 fast cure can be used on damp surfaces for emergency repairs, and is safe for underwater applications. But it cannot be applied to a submerged surface. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I'm mounting a fixed aluminum powder coated kicker motor mount, bolted with 5, 1/2" diameter SS bolts. Should I us this 5200 to seal around and in bolt holes and bolts, or would the 4200 be a better choice....or, should I just use West Marine Silicone caulking? I also want to plug some old holes through my transom with a dowel and 5200, would the 5200 be better than epoxy resin UV wise and durability wise?
Asked by Surhammer
Verified Reply - Maureen5200 is a great permanent seal. 4200 is less permanent so you can remove the mount if needed. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is this smaller tube of 5200 fast cure, available in "tan" color, or do I have to buy a whole larger caulking gun tube? Also, is this "fast cure" stuff, just as good/durable as the regular 5200?
Asked by Surhammer
Verified Reply - MaureenUnfortunately, WM# 227538 10 fluid ounces, is the only size we have available in tan. Yes, it is just as durable, just cures faster. Was this answer helpful to you
