Grand Opening of West Marine’s Newest Flagship Store Brings Hundreds of Water-Loving New Yorkers to West ISLIP
“Cruising for a Cause” Charity Night Raises Thousands for Local Marine-Based Organizations
Watsonville, CA (March 26, 2014)
West Marine (Nasdaq:WMAR), the nation’s largest waterlife outfitter exclusively offering gear, apparel and footwear for anyone who enjoys recreational time on or around the water, hosted a four-day grand opening event (March 20–23, 2014) to celebrate its New York flagship store in West Islip.
The festivities kicked off on March 20, 2014, with a surprise ribbon cutting by the flagship’s first customer, Long Island local resident and lifelong boater Tammy Jaggi. The celebration continued on Thursday evening with the “Cruising for a Cause” charity night, which raised more than $13,000 for local maritime organizations and non-profits. More than 500 customers turned out to shop as they enjoyed live music, local oysters from Blue Island Oyster Farm, raffle items and a live auction. Among the big ticket auction items was a fishing trip with Captain Ralph Wilkins of National Geographic Channel’s hit series, “Wicked Tuna.”
From Friday through Sunday, the weekend’s events continued with special in-store appearances, autograph signings and meet and greets with “Wicked Tuna’s” Captain Ralph Wilkins and deckhand Nick Mavar from Discovery Channel’s hit show, “Deadliest Catch.” Customers were also treated to a mini boat show, free daily product demos and informative seminars from boating and fishing experts as they shopped storewide grand opening deals and discounts.
“We were thrilled to introduce people from all over Long Island and beyond to our newly expanded flagship and what it offers to those who love being on and around the water,” said General Manager Albert Milam. “Our customers responded well to the expanded selection, and we were honored to partner with local marine-based organizations to raise funds and awareness for their important work.”
Conveniently situated on the South Shore of Long Island between the Great South Bay and Long Island Sound, the West Islip store is an ideal location for New York area boaters to shop for their boating, fishing, paddlesports and waterlife needs. As West Marine’s latest flagship, the location has more than doubled in size to 24,800 square feet and boasts a bigger and broader selection of 18,000 nautical necessities storewide.Among some of the highlights in the newly expanded location is a fishing department and bait shack, offering a larger assortment of rods and reels, an expanded apparel and footwear department, which includes a selection of foulweather gear and sunglasses, and a more robust stand-up paddleboard section for paddlesports enthusiasts looking to make the most of their time on the water. Customers will also find a large engine and repairs department and a newly expanded selection of electronics and navigation products, with visible displays that allow shoppers to test out the products for themselves before buying.
The New York flagship is also a regional hub for Port Supply, the wholesale arm that supports marine businesses and delivers a broad selection of products to keep the industry cruising.
