Less Than Three Weeks Remain to Support West Marine's BlueFuture "Month of Giving"

Proceeds will help fund much-needed BlueFuture grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to getting youth on and around the water

Watsonville, CA, December 15, 2016 –Less than three weeks remain to support West Marine’s annual BlueFuture Month of Giving, which runs until Dec. 31. During this four-week fundraiser, customers can make donations to BlueFuture at westmarine.com and at checkout in West Marine’s 250-plus stores across North America. All proceeds will help fund the BlueFuture Fund grant program.

Through BlueFuture grants, West Marine distributes tens of thousands of dollars annually to dozens of nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to Waterlife adventure, education and stewardship. These organizations work hard to provide access to the water through boating, sailing, fishing, paddling, boatbuilding and marine science programs, particularly among underserved youth populations.

“All of us at West Marine have deeply personal stories about our relationships to the water, and about the lasting impact of a Waterlife,” says Lindsey Johnson, West Marine’s Director of Communications. “That’s why it’s so important to us that we give back. Through our BlueFuture grants, we can provide much-needed support to community organizations that are getting kids on and around the water in recreational and educational capacities.

“During this fall’s grant cycle, we received a record number of applications from highly qualified candidates,” she continued. “It’s critical that we reach our goal of $30,000 during the Month of Giving so we can fully fund our 2017 grants and possibly even expand our reach.”

West Marine’s $1,500 BlueFuture grants provide important funding for community-based nonprofit organizations, especially because they’re unrestricted. Grant recipients can determine how the funding should be used, whether it’s for program supplies, equipment and facilities maintenance, scholarships, or even general operations.

“We’ve been getting extremely positive feedback from grant recipients,” Johnson says. “The funding is making a real difference for them, and for the children they serve. We hope that our customers and supporters around the country will consider joining us this month; together, we can continue the good work that BlueFuture has started in so many places.”

BlueFuture is a donor-advised fund set up through the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, and all donations are fully tax-deductible. During the 2016 Month of Giving, donations can be made online or at checkout in a West Marine store. To learn more about BlueFuture, visit westmarine.com/BlueFuture.
