These board shorts combine performance with a fresh, slimmer profile you'll find reduces drag in the water.
You thought Patagonia's trusty Wavefarer® Board Shorts were the last word for surfing, and you'd be right if it wasn't for these evolutionary Stretch Planing Board Shorts. Versatile and performance-focused, these board shorts feature a slimmer profile, minimal drag and highly functional 2-way stretch. You'll also find a streamlined waistband, closer-fitting lines through the thigh and the inseam has been subtly shifted forward to help eliminate chafing in this sensitive area. Superlight (4 ounces), durable and fast-drying, these board shorts are made of durable, 100% recycled polyester to reduce the impact on your favorite playground—Mother Ocean. They have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish so they repel moisture and dry quickly. On top of that, they also feature 50+ UPF sun protection so you won't have to cut your day short to deal with a sunburn.
The Stretch Planing Board Shorts have a regular length (20" outseam) for a traditional fit and greater sun protection for your legs. Patagonia has added a few extras to these shorts as well. The flat-lying fly features a rubber button closure and a bartacked ladderlock drawstring for durability. A self-draining pocket on the right hip has a corrosion-proof plastic zipper, internal key loop and a zipper pull so you can access it in a hurry or with wet hands. This pocket also doubles as a self-storage pouch so you can stuff the shorts inside and keep them handy in case someone suddenly shouts, "Surf's up!" And although it's a small detail, there's a notch at the seam that provides just a little bit more freedom to move.
2.8oz., 100% recycled polyester. Fair Trade Certified™ sewing. Imported.
The Stretch Planing Board Shorts feature a sun protection rating of 50+ UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which means only 1/50th of the sun's UV rays that fall on the surface will pass through and reach your skin. The sun protection is built-in so, unlike messy sunscreen, it won't wear off or need to be reapplied throughout the day.
Fair Trade Certified™ Sewing
What makes a factory Fair Trade Certified? Rigorous standards for health and safety, respect for the environment, no child or forced labor, maternity and paid leave, community empowerment and additional money back to workers. Patagonia pays a premium for every Fair Trade Certified item that carries their label. That extra money goes directly back to the factory workers, and they decide how to spend it. They can allocate it as a cash bonus, use it for a collective social investment or both.
