Swim and Snorkel Gear Guide

Explore the world beneath the waves with high quality equipment. Let’s go over the swim and snorkel gear that West Marine has to offer and what you need to look for.

Snorkeling Gear

A basic snorkeling ensemble consists of a mask and a snorkel and usually a pair of snorkeling fins. Each of these items can be purchased separately or as part of a snorkeling set. Some snorkeling sets only include a mask and a snorkel. Other sets also include a pair of fins.

Make sure your snorkeling mask fits.

You need your mask and snorkel to be comfortable and fit you well. Better snorkeling masks feature a tempered glass lens and a hypoallergenic (often silicon rubber) skirt that should make a good seal against your face. Full-face snorkel masks allow for nearly unrestricted viewing and are made so swimmers do not have to hold a snorkel in their mouths. For novices and children, they can provide a more comfortable experience.

Snorkels

As mentioned, snorkels can be purchased with a mask or separately. There are a few styles of snorkels from which to choose. Basic J-shaped snorkels consist of a mouthpiece, a tube and a snorkel keeper. The mouthpiece should be comfortable and easily kept in place. The snorkel keeper is used to position the snorkel so that the top of the tube is above the water.

Dry snorkels have a special stopper at the top that ensures water doesn’t enter the tube when you go beneath the surface. Purge valves allow for any water that does enter the tube to easy be dumped out before breathing.

For those who freedive, specialty snorkels are designed to reduce drag while diving and make for easy breathing when you resurface.

Fin Selection

The size and style of the foot fins you select should be based on your skill level and strength. You’ll find that medium length blades with adjustable straps make for a nice fit for most snorkelers. Longer blades are great for spearfishing or freediving as they reduce the work needed to move quickly up and down in the water. If you plan on purchasing a set of snorkeling fins, we suggest you invest in a pair of fin socks or dive boots that will protect your feet against chafe and blisters.

Swimming Gear

To improve your swimming experience and eliminate those bloodshot eyes, West Marine offers a great selection of swim goggles. When shopping for swim goggles, look for models that have an easily adjustable strap. The better models often boast polarized lenses and a comfortable silicon rubber seal that should fit comfortably around your eyes. Swim gear also includes swim goggles and swim masks for children and youth. The selection also includes swim caps, silicon ear plugs and nose clips.

Swim & Snorkel Gear FAQ

When selecting a snorkel mask, prioritize a comfortable, watertight seal around the face to prevent leaks. Look for masks with a wide field of view, ideally with tempered glass or polycarbonate lenses for durability. Anti-fog coatings or vents are beneficial for clear vision underwater, especially in warm or humid conditions.

Yes, beginner sets often include easy-to-use snorkels with splash guards or dry-top features to prevent water from entering. Flexible fins with an adjustable heel strap are also ideal, as they accommodate a range of foot sizes and provide easier maneuverability. Look for lightweight sets with low-volume masks for quick clearing and easier handling.

A dry snorkel features a valve at the top that closes when submerged, blocking water entry. This is especially helpful for snorkeling in choppy waters or diving below the surface, as it allows you to resurface without clearing the snorkel. Dry snorkels also have purge valves for easy clearing of any residual water, making them user-friendly and efficient.

Fins should fit snugly but not tightly to avoid blisters. Open-heel fins with adjustable straps are versatile, accommodating various foot sizes and allowing use with booties. Closed-heel fins offer a streamlined fit and are typically preferred for warm waters and shorter snorkeling sessions. Longer fins provide more power but can be harder to maneuver, while shorter fins are better for tight spaces and easier on leg muscles.

Yes, many brands offer children’s snorkel gear with smaller, softer masks for comfortable fits and shorter, more flexible fins for easier movement. Children’s snorkels are often designed with splash guards to minimize water intake, making them safer and more enjoyable for young snorkelers.

After each use, rinse your snorkel gear thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and chlorine. Let the equipment air-dry completely before storing it in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can damage the materials. Regular cleaning prevents mold growth, and storing in a gear bag can help protect against scratches and deformation.
