Boat Jack Plates Do the Heavy Lifting
Boats equipped with large, heavy outboard motors can benefit from the installation of one or more (for multiple motor installations) jack plates. Jack plates are outboard motor mounts that are often referred to as transom jacks, transom jack plates and outboard jack plates. Manual jack plates and hydraulic jack plate models are offered. Jack plates mount to a boat’s transom and their purpose is to vertically raise an outboard up. One benefit of doing this is to reduce the chance of a prop strike when navigating “skinny” water. For wet-stored boats, raising the outboard up to where it is entirely out of the water eliminates the possibility of galvanic corrosion. Jack plates are mainly made out of marine-grade aluminum. Some include polymer parts to reduce corrosion.
