SOLAS flares can be seen at the greatest distance for the longest period of time.

SOLAS flares like the Red Parachute Signal Rocket you see here offer far better performance than conventional United States Coast Guard approved pyrotechnic signals. This is because they are designed to meet stricter standards set by an international safety organization (SOLAS stands for Safety Of Life At Sea). SOLAS parachute flares ascend to more than 1,000' and burn at a dazzling 30,000 candela for 40 seconds. Compare this to non-SOLAS USCG flares typically found on recreational boats, such as Orion’s pistol-fired 12-gauge flares, which burn at 16,000 candlepower for 7 seconds and reach 500' and you will understand why these cost more.

For most inland and coastal boaters, non-SOLAS (USCG) flares will suffice. But if you are an offshore boater who wants flares that can be seen at the greatest distance for the longest period of time, choose SOLAS flares. World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations, which govern many offshore sailboat races, require SOLAS flares as part of a boat’s safety inventory.

Comments about Red Parachute SOLAS Signal Rocket by Orion | Safety at West Marine

I never thought much about signaling until I had an emergency on the water. I was on a large lake taking on water in the evening and the engine died. I called for a tow but they were having difficulty locating me. I had an expired flare just like this in a compartment. When I launched it, assistance arrived quickly and we got my boat pumped out and towed for repairs. After that, I relpaced all my safety equipment.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Comments about Red Parachute SOLAS Signal Rocket by Orion | Safety at West Marine

Next to EPIRB and VHF, this is the emergency signal device that I always keep on board. 12 gauge aerial flares have very brief visibility, only a few seconds; SOLAS parachute flares significantly increase the chances of being seen. Parachute hangs in the air and flare burns super bright for 40+ seconds.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend
